New New Testament translation expected to spark debate

HBL says sacred texts become more, not less, interesting when they are tested against new knowledge and new language choices.

A new translation of the New Testament is likely to trigger both enthusiasm and irritation. In HBL’s view, that reaction is exactly why the work matters: sacred texts remain alive when they are read through changing language, scholarship and interpretation.

The editorial argues that holy texts do not lose relevance when they are revisited. On the contrary, new language choices and fresh knowledge can make them more accessible to today’s readers while also challenging familiar ways of understanding them.

The debate is therefore about more than wording. It is also about how religious texts continue to speak in a changing time, and HBL’s message is that the discussion itself shows the text still has the power to engage and divide readers.
