US administration seeks to dismantle ICC as Trump’s appeal finds little support

According to Ilta-Sanomat, Washington wants to weaken the International Criminal Court, but only one member state has followed Trump’s call. Pictured: the ICC building in The Hague.

The United States administration has made dismantling the International Criminal Court a goal, Ilta-Sanomat reports. The move marks a sharp challenge to an institution that plays a central role in international justice from its base in The Hague.

President Donald Trump has also urged ICC member states to leave the court, but so far only one country has done so. That suggests Washington’s pressure has not yet shifted the broader position of member states.

The development matters because the ICC deals with the gravest international crimes and depends on support from its members. For now, however, Trump’s appeal appears to have had only limited impact.
