UN: More than half of Afghan women leave home only rarely

The Taliban’s latest university ban targets smartphones, but it does not affect women because women are already barred from higher education.

According to the UN, more than half of women in Afghanistan leave their homes only once or twice a month. The figure highlights how tightly the Taliban’s rule has restricted women’s daily lives and movement.

The Taliban has recently tightened rules in universities as well, banning smartphones on campus. That measure does not apply to women, however, because women are already banned from universities altogether.

The latest restrictions underline how different layers of control continue to shape women’s lives in Afghanistan. The UN estimate offers a rare snapshot of how limited public life has become for many women.
