Hamina will host two separate events on Saturday that carry political and social significance. Hamina Pride is scheduled to take place in Kesapuisto at noon, while the Kaakkois-Suomi district of Sinimusta liike is holding an activity day in the town starting at 10 a.m. Hamina Pride chair Wilma Heino says police have been informed in advance.
Heino says the hope is that both events proceed peacefully. She does not describe the situation as alarming, but the timing means the weekend will draw unusual attention for both Pride participants and Sinimusta liike supporters. Informing the police is part of preparing for a day when two very different gatherings take place in the same town.
According to an announcement published on the party’s website in the last week of May, the Sinimusta liike event is a regional activity day for South-Eastern Finland in Hamina. Hamina Pride’s park celebration is part of the town’s Pride programme and will be held in Kesapuisto.
The overlap places Hamina under a sharper spotlight than usual on Saturday. Although the events are separate, their simultaneous timing may increase interest among participants and bystanders alike. For now, Heino is stressing above all that preparations are aimed at keeping the day as calm as possible.
That leaves Hamina’s weekend as a stage for both a Pride celebration and a Sinimusta liike activity day. Attention now turns to how the events unfold in practice and whether the atmosphere remains peaceful, as Hamina Pride’s chair hopes.
