Drivers in transport and haulage work say a basic part of the job has become harder: finding a place to stop. According to Iltalehti, the shortage of service stations and truck parking areas is making many drivers cover extra kilometres just to find somewhere to eat and wash.

The problem is made worse by the fact that many service stations have become unmanned fuel stations and are often closed at night, even though that is when the need can be greatest. For drivers, the issue is not only convenience but also whether the working day includes a practical chance to rest and take care of basic needs.

The lack of suitable stops matters because transport schedules are tight and routes often have to be planned around where a truck can actually pull in. Iltalehti says the shortage creates difficulties for many people in driving and transport jobs, although the report does not outline any immediate solution.
