Finland has recorded a record number of tick-borne encephalitis cases this year, according to the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare, THL. The national infectious disease register has logged more than 390 cases so far, marking a sharp increase from previous years.
The change becomes even clearer when compared with the situation a decade ago. At that time, only 61 cases were reported, showing how much more common the disease has become in Finland.
THL's figures suggest this is not an isolated spike but part of a longer-term trend. Tick-borne illnesses have become a more visible public health issue, and the latest register data underline that shift.
