Strong winds hinder firefighting on Crete
HBL reports that wind is making it harder to contain the fire on the Greek island of Crete, while the major blaze in Gironde, France, is now stable. Image: smoke rising from a wildfire area.

Fire crews on Crete are facing difficult conditions as strong winds continue to hamper efforts to bring the blaze under control, HBL reports. The Greek island remains among the southern European areas still under pressure from wildfires.
There is more cautious optimism from Gironde in France, where the large fire is now described as stable. That does not mean the danger has fully passed, but the situation there has eased compared with earlier.
