In South Ostrobothnia, vocational education is drawing more young applicants than general upper secondary school. Yle reports that nearly 1,600 young people applied to vocational school this year, compared with 1,100 who sought a place in upper secondary education.
The figures stand out because they run against a wider national trend, where the popularity of vocational education has been declining in many parts of Finland. In South Ostrobothnia, however, practical training still appears to be a strong choice for school-leavers.
The application numbers also highlight how education paths can differ sharply from one region to another. For local schools, the demand may shape how places are allocated and how future training needs are met.
