A NATO summit in Turkey appears to have gone better than expected for Ukraine and may also be increasing pressure on Russian President Vladimir Putin. Iltalehti says Putin may finally be starting to understand that the war he launched may not end in victory.
At the meeting, concrete arms and systems purchases worth more than 50 billion euros were announced, strengthening Ukraine’s defence significantly. US President Donald Trump also granted Ukraine a licence to manufacture Patriot missiles, a move seen as highly symbolic.
The paper also noted that Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi appeared together in a notably positive way. That suggests Trump’s attitude toward Ukraine and Europe has become more favourable, which could shape Western support going forward.
