Joutseno cemetery was spared vandalism in the early hours of Thursday, according to Liisa Tiimo, cemetery manager at the Lappeenranta parish. Some damage has still been found at the site, and a number of gravestones have had to be repaired and returned to their places.
Tiimo said the stones have been put back fairly well, which has also made it possible to identify where damage occurred. The case highlights how important upkeep and monitoring of cemeteries remain, even in summer when more people are moving around the area.
The parish has not yet given further details on the extent of the damage or how it was caused. For now, the situation appears to be at least partly under control, and repair work will continue as needed.
