Hungary’s search for a presidential candidate has taken an unusual turn after Prime Minister Péter Magyar asked citizens to suggest people from outside party politics for the country’s largely ceremonial presidency. According to Iltalehti, the most popular name so far is retired electrical engineer András Arató, who is globally known as the face of the Hide the Pain Harold meme.

Several other well-known Hungarians have also appeared in the public suggestions. Among the names mentioned are Nobel Prize-winning biochemist Katalin Karikó, top model Barbara Palvin and Ernő Rubik, the inventor of the Rubik’s Cube, showing that many voters are looking for a figure with international recognition.

The presidency in Hungary carries mostly symbolic duties, which makes the debate less about executive power and more about representation. For now, the discussion remains at the suggestion stage, and no official candidate list has been confirmed.
