The Freedom Ship concept is back in the spotlight as an ambitious floating city that could carry as many as 80,000 passengers. The plan calls for a vessel stretching 1.6 kilometres, making it one of the most unusual housing and travel ideas ever proposed.

According to Iltalehti, the project dates back to the 1990s, when American engineer Norman Nixon first presented it. Nixon died in 2012, but a new group is now motivated to push the idea forward again, even though a ship of this size would be too large for ordinary ports.

That port problem is one reason the project still draws attention: it is not just a curiosity, but a proposal that would challenge the limits of both shipping and floating housing. For now, however, Freedom Ship remains an idea rather than a built reality.
