Insurer: avoid driving through floodwater — compensation may be denied

According to Yle, only a parked car may qualify for compensation, and even then the vehicle must be towed away. The advice is especially relevant during sudden downpours and street flooding.

Drivers should try to go around floodwater rather than drive through it, because an insurer says compensation may not be paid if a car is driven into deep water. Yle reports that the basic advice is to avoid flooded areas whenever possible.

For insurance purposes, the key condition is that the damaged car was parked when the flooding happened. Even then, the vehicle must be towed before compensation can be claimed. The guidance matters most when heavy rain quickly floods streets and parking areas.
