Finnish Food Authority: young children can drink up to 6 dl of oat milk a day

Specialist Kaisa Kukkonen says the key is the average daily intake, not one-off higher amounts. The guidance may help parents choosing plant-based drinks for children.

Young children can safely consume up to 6 decilitres of oat milk a day, according to the Finnish Food Authority. Specialist Kaisa Kukkonen said the most important thing is the average intake over time, rather than a single day’s amount.

Kukkonen said that slightly higher consumption on some days is not harmful. The guidance is relevant for families using oat milk as part of a child’s everyday diet, especially as plant-based drinks have become more common in Finnish homes.

The Food Authority’s message is meant to give parents a clearer benchmark when choosing drinks for young children. Yle News reported the guidance on Thursday.
