The European Commission has published a report proposing new limits on children’s use of social media. Under the proposal, children under 13 would be allowed to use social media only with their parents’ approval and supervision.

The report reflects the EU’s effort to tighten rules around children’s online activity, but the initiative also drew criticism in Finland. Minister Partanen said the EU’s social media move lacks ambition.

The Commission’s line does not yet mean an immediate change across the EU, but it could shape future work in member states. The safety of children online has been a recurring issue across Europe as authorities look for ways to make digital platforms safer.
