Hope that an old deed of gift could protect the Karamalmi schoolyard in Espoo is fading. According to HBL, the city may have the right to act against the donor’s conditions, even though the land was originally given with specific terms.

The dispute concerns the city’s plan to place a Finnish-language school on the plot of the Swedish-language school. If Espoo’s interpretation stands, the project could move forward, while opponents would lose one of their strongest legal arguments.

What remains unclear is how binding the deed’s conditions are in practice. HBL says the outcome could prove decisive for the future of the Karamalmi schoolyard.
