One of Europe’s key transport routes is so shallow in places that cargo ships can only carry a fraction of their usual loads.

Water levels on the Danube have dropped to historic lows in some areas, creating problems for freight traffic across Europe. Yle reports that the shallow river is now limiting how much cargo ships can carry at one time.
The Danube is an important transport corridor for goods moving between several countries. When vessels cannot be fully loaded, deliveries slow down and costs may rise, although there is no further information yet on how long the situation will last.
